"The SEC worked with its 14 institutions to identify a student-athlete who has had a teacher that greatly impacted his or her life. Each of the teachers was honored through the student-athlete's testimonial featured on SEC Nation, the SEC Network's traveling pregame show, throughout the regular season. The student-athlete video tributes were also featured weekly on social mediaLinks to an external site..The mission of Extra Yard for Teachers is to elevate the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers. Each teacher mentioned in the weekly SEC Nation student-athlete testimonials will be recognized, and his or her school will receive a $10,000 grant for the purchase of school supplies and materials."

Receiving the University of Tennessee nomination to participate in the SEC Extra Yard for Teachers was beyond an honor for me as well as the Hawkins County School District. I attribute much of my collegiate successes to the soft and hard skills that I learned in Mrs. Tommie Loudy's health science classroom. Her support and guidance continues to be a rock that I lean on each and every day as I've entered my adult life. As a student-athlete, it is empowering to know that I can utilize my platform in sport to invest back into those who invested in me. I hope the spotlight shines bright on the vocational programs, specifically health science, at Cherokee High School, and that the grant will aid in their mission of graduating respectful, responsible, and reliable citizens.
